Boat Crash with Injury or Death

A major maritime negligence lawsuit has been filed in the Pinellas County Circuit Court following a two-vessel collision near the Memorial Causeway Bridge in Clearwater, Florida.

The legal action stems from an incident on April 27, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., involving a commercial ferry and a private recreational vessel.

The Incident

According to the filed complaint, passengers on board a Clearwater Ferry Services vessel were injured when the ferry collided with a 37-foot recreational boat. The lawsuit alleges that the private watercraft was being operated at an excessive speed for the prevailing conditions and that the operator failed to take proper evasive action to avoid the crash.

The lawsuit brings forward six distinct counts seeking damages in excess of $50,000:

  • Negligence against the Ferry Company: Alleging that the commercial operators failed in their duty to safely navigate and protect their business invitees.
  • Negligence against the Recreational Boat Operator: Alleging reckless operation and failure to maintain a proper lookout or safe speed.
  • Vicarious Liability against the Boat Owner: Seeking to hold the corporate owner of the 37-foot vessel financially responsible for allowing the operator to use the watercraft.

Seeking Compensation for Injuries

The plaintiffs involved report sustaining severe, continuing, and permanent bodily injuries from the impact. The damages sought encompass medical and hospital expenses, pain and suffering, physical disability, disfigurement, mental anguish, lost wages, and a diminished capacity to earn a living in the future. A jury trial has been demanded to resolve the matter.

What to Do If You Are Injured on the Water

Boating and ferry accidents involve a complex mix of Florida personal injury laws and general maritime/admiralty laws. If you or a loved one are ever involved in a watercraft collision:

  1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Document all injuries right away, as internal trauma from vessel impacts often takes hours or days to fully manifest.
  2. Report the Incident: Ensure the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) or local marine authorities file an official boating accident report.
  3. Preserve Evidence: Keep track of your passenger tickets, medical receipts, and any photographic evidence of the vessels or conditions.
